Based in Newcastle, JTP Painting has built a strong reputation for quality workmanship, reliability, and a clean, organised approach to every job. The team, led by owner Jaydn, works across the region on residential repaints, new builds and commercial projects.
Can you give us an intro to your business?
We’re based in Newcastle, and most of our work is around the coastal suburbs — places like Merewether and Adamstown — but we’ll travel right across the region for the right job. We do a mix of repaints, new builds, and commercial projects, repaints being our core work. It’s always satisfying about taking a tired home and making it feel new again.
How did you get started in painting?
I was 15 when I started my apprenticeship. School wasn’t really for me so I was ready to get out of there and start a trade. I began with a big company and finished my training with my dad who was a painting working for himself.
By 19, I had a young family and decided to give my own business a crack. I didn’t have a big vision to grow a huge company — I just knew I was doing good work and saw it as a way to provide for my young family.
The business actually turned ten a couple of weeks ago. Through that time I’ve trained about eight apprentices, had 4 children with my wife and grown the business to what it is today – all before I turn 30 tomorrow!
My very first apprentice was a good mate’s younger brother — he worked with me for six years before starting his own business. That’s something I’m really proud of: seeing my apprentices grow, whether they stick with painting, move into another trade – some even moving into professional sport!
What’s your secret to building such a strong team?
I’ve always set high standards and been very transparent with the team – I think they appreciate that and enjoy being a part of the culture we have built. Some people think painting’s a cruisy job — but it’s not. It’s fast-paced, there’s always something happening, and not everyone’s ready for that.
What sets JTP apart from other painting businesses?
We’re clean, organised, and we make it a point to be approachable. I want clients to feel comfortable having a chat if something’s not quite right — that way, we can sort it on the spot. We focus on clear communication and pride in our work. I think that’s what keeps people coming back and referring us on.
Which Spray Gun Club product do you use, and why?
Right now, I’ve got the SGC 3 and the SGC 7. Both are great machines that suit different jobs, depending on the scale. I chose SGC because of the customer service, I think it’s something you only get from an independent business.
Mitch is local and goes above and beyond. If I’ve got a question after hours, he’ll answer the call and help me sort it for the next day. The turnaround time is fast, and if I need something, I can just pop in and see him. Plus, I like supporting another local, independent business that really looks after its customers.
What advice do you have for painters considering a spray gun for the first time?
Go and get the right knowledge before you start spraying. Don’t just wing it like I did! Back when I started, I was working with my dad — he’s old-school — and I just knew there had to be a better way. There wasn’t much education out there then so I kind of had to just figure it our. Which I don’t suggest.
Even now, I’m still learning. I’ll take advice from anyone because there’s always something new to pick up.
