Airless Spray Gun Maintenance in Australia (Step-by-Step Guide in 2026)

spray-gun-maintenance

Whether you’re spraying homes in Newcastle, commercial sites in Sydney, or fencing in regional Queensland, proper spray gun maintenance is essential in Australia’s demanding conditions.

Heat, humidity, dust, and coastal air can all accelerate wear on your equipment. Knowing how to properly clean an airless spray gun helps prevent breakdowns, costly repairs, and job delays.

At The Spray Gun Club, we support professional painters and contractors across Australia with servicing, parts and expert advice.

Why Spray Gun Maintenance Is Critical in Australian Conditions

Australia’s climate can be tough on spray equipment, making spray gun maintenance essential:

  • High summer temperatures dry paint faster inside hoses and machines
  • Coastal areas increase corrosion risk i.e Salt water spray
  • Dust and dirt exposure blocks filters quickly if paint bucket is not covered properly

Regular spray gun servicing reduces failure risk and keeps your finish quality consistent across the board.

Daily Cleaning Routine (Best Practice for Australian Painters)

If you’re searching for how to clean a paint sprayer properly, follow this process after every job.

Step 1: Safely Relieve Pressure

When you are finished with a job, release the pressure from the spray hose, and flick the valve back into prime.

Relieving pressure before dropping the machine into prime increases the longevity of your prime spray valve.

Step 2: Flush Immediately

In hot Australian weather, paint can begin drying internally within minutes.

  • Water-based paints → flush with clean water
  • Solvent-based paints → flush with recommended thinner or mineral based solvent

Flush machine until spray and prime hose runs with completely clear water or thinner.

Step 3: Cleaning the Spray Tip

Whether you are using water or mineral based paint, soaking your tips in paint thinners is recommended.

Replacing your tips after multiple high volume sprays is important as your tips can wear down over time, causing overspray that wastes paint, and tip wear is common in high-volume commercial spraying. Our recommendation is to replace your tip every 400L.

Step 4: Clean Filters Thoroughly

Australian dust and site debris often clog filters faster than expected.

Remove and clean:

  • Gun/Handpiece filter
  • Manifold filter
  • Inlet Filter

Blocked filters are the #1 cause of poor atomisation, reduced paint flow and blockages within machines that have not had their filters checked and cleaned semi-regularly during a spray gun maintenance routine.

Storage Tips for Australian Climate

Coastal Areas (NSW, QLD, WA)

Salt air increases corrosion risk for spary gun parts, making regular spray gun maintenance a must.

  • Always use pump armour fluid, like our Mantis fluid which can be diluted in a 10:1 ratio
  • Only running it through the pump while in prime is required
  • Remove spray tip from guard before storing

Regional & Rural Areas

Dust accumulation is common.

  • Cover hoses
  • Store indoors
  • Clean filters more frequently
  • Store in spray position to allow no air through the prime hose

Common Spray Gun Maintenance Mistakes in Australia

❌ Leaving paint in system during hot weather
❌ Storing equipment in sheds without protection
❌ Ignoring early pressure drops
❌ Skipping regular servicing    ❌ Not using mantis fluid for piston lubrication

Most of the major breakdowns we have repaired could have been prevented with simple, consistent cleaning and spray gun maintenance.
