Painter Spotlight: HP Painting, Geelong. Restoring Heritage Homes with the SGC 3

At Spray Gun Club, we love seeing our gear in action with talented tradespeople. This month, we’re featuring HP Geelong (Home Painters), a painting company specialising in heritage home restorations across the Surf Coast. We spoke with the owner, Matt, about his trade journey, his passion for painting, and what he loves most about his SGC 3.

Matt, can you tell us a bit about HP and your work?

We’re based in Geelong and service Geelong, the Bellarine, and the Surf Coast. Most of our projects are home restoration jobs that run for 6–8 weeks. We’re a true one-stop shop for restorations—stripping homes back to bare timber, replacing any rotted wood, and bringing them back to life as good as new.

We’re best known for our work with Heritage Australia, where we focus on restoring the character of old homes. Often, that means using heritage-style colour palettes that respect the original charm while giving the property a subtle modern refresh.

Alongside heritage work, we also take on architectural builds, which gives us a nice mix of traditional and contemporary projects.

How did you get started in the painting industry?

It’s a bit of a funny story because my whole family are lawyers, accountants, or in finance—definitely not tradies. My uncle married into the family and was a painter. When I was 15, I worked with him on school holidays and absolutely loved it.

I tried studying law at uni for six months, but it wasn’t for me. My uncle had this passion for painting that was contagious. He’d always say, “Every day is a good day when you’re on the brush.”

I dropped out of uni to pursue painting and haven’t looked back.

What sets your business apart from other painters in the area?

A few things that we do differently:

Complete home restoration: We take on the jobs other painters often shy away from, especially heritage homes that can look like they’re in complete disrepair.

Advanced equipment: While many painters still use old-school methods, we invest in professional gear like our airless sprayers and tools for stripping and prepping surfaces.

Specialised projects: We can tackle complex heritage work without compromising the original character of the home.

Using the right tech gives us a competitive edge, letting us do high-quality work faster and more efficiently.

Which Spray Gun Club sprayer are you using, and why?

We’re using the SGC 3 Electric Airless Sprayer, it’s perfect for our jobs.

Our restoration projects often involve large home exteriors—up to 120 metres around—so we need a sprayer that’s portable but still powerful. The SGC 3 is a great fit. It’s not too small to slow you down, but it’s also not a heavy, oversized machine that’s a pain to move.

How has your experience been with the Spray Gun Club team?

I’ve known Todd for years, and the after-sales support is honestly what makes Spray Gun Club unbeatable.

A sprayer is only as good as the service and support behind it. With other brands, you might end up with a broken machine sitting in your shed for weeks while you wait for tech support to get back to you. Spray Gun Club is the complete opposite—they answer the phone, help troubleshoot instantly, and offer affordable servicing and warranty options.

The SGC 3 performs just as well as the bigger-name sprayers we’ve used (like Graco), but the servicing costs are about a third and the team genuinely cares about educating customers, not just selling machines.

What’s a standout project you’ve completed with your SGC 3?

The one that comes to mind is a beautiful Edwardian-style house we restored recently in a soft light green. It’s one of my favourites because it perfectly shows how a heritage home can be brought back to life without losing its original charm. (Check it out on HP Geelong’g Instagram!)

What advice would you give to painters thinking about upgrading to an airless sprayer?

Do it—it’s not as scary as you think.

Switching to spray gives you more time for the important work like prepping and sanding, and makes the actual painting so much faster and smoother. For our 6–8 week restoration jobs, hand-painting would turn them into 4–5 month projects.

Sprayers also give better coverage, which means when you sand back between coats, you’re not burning straight through the paint. It’s efficient and clean.

Most importantly, make sure you buy from a company that supports you!
